Quick and Easy Energy Drink before Auditions or Performances

Got Spirulina?

In my other posts, particularly “McDonalds and focus in the brain”, I gave you some excellent foods that can provide immediate support for quick energy. In this post I will give you two outstanding alternatives to the standard Red Bull, Diet Coke and Double espresso from Starbucks.

This first drink is one of my favorite and most effective energy booster and brain stimulating drinks. You can keep the contents right inside you bag and make it in seconds, without the need for refrigeration. You won’t crash 30 minutes after you drink it or have a build up of mucus in your throat or fog up your brain.

The drink consists of water, Spirulina, Emergen-C, and Ginko Bilboa or Gotu Cola.
Spirulina is one of the most amazing foods on our planet and is literally a “superfood.” It is a blue-green algae found in warm alkaline fresh water bodies. It is most often the “protein of choice” for vegetarians due to the fact that it is 65 to 71 percent complete protein, with all essential amino acids in perfect balance. In comparison, beef is only 22 percent protein.

Spirulina is also loaded with Beta-Carotene. Beta carotene is an antioxidant that has been shown to have anti aging properties. Spirulina has a high level of chlorophyll which cleans and purifies the body keeping our throats and voice crystal clear and free of mucus and phlegm.

Spirulina also has plenty of vitamin B. ( See my post on energy and Vitamin B ) A teaspoon of Spirulina supplies 2 1/2 times the Recommended Daily Allowance of vitamin B12 and contains over twice the amount of this vitamin found in an equivalent serving of liver. Essentially Spirulina energizes, clears and stimulates the brain all at once.

Emergen-C are small convenient powdered vitamin C packets that every voice professional should never be without. There are 1000mg of vitamin-c in every packet as well as 200mg of potassium, another energy producing supplement. They come in all different flavors and taste great.

Ginko Bilbao and Gotu cola are herbs that stimulate the brain improving mental function and enhancing blood circulation. Either one may be used. Use a liquid non alcohol extract for this drink. None of these ingredients need refrigeration. Keep them in your bag or purse on a regular basis. You never know when you may need them.
Here is what you will need to make the drink.

One 16oz bottle of filtered water.
Two Emergen-C Packets of any flavor.
One level tablespoon of Spirulina
Two dropperfuls of Ginko Bilboa or Gotu Cola.

Mix everything together by shaking the bottle vigorously. I have found that it tastes the best when using cold water. If you want to rev it up a few notches and really wake up your voice and throat, add a pinch of cayenne pepper to the mix. This combination is amazing and will provide you with overall body energy and mental clarity for hours.

For those of you who have difficulty with powdered drink mixes, try this alternative:
In place of the Spirulina, use one cup of peppermint tea and eliminate the Emergen-C.
In my opinion this drink is not as powerful but is still very effective.

As always, I wish you the best on your journey to Superior Vocal Health.
