Natural Vocal Health remedies for dealing with Allergies and Spring Sinus Issues
Spring is upon us once again, and with it comes the potential for all kinds of sinus issues including allergies from pollen, grass and other floral debris. For the voice professional, Spring can be a delight of new gigs, out door concerts and warmer tours. However at the same time, it can mean serious difficulties for the throat, sinuses and vocal cords due to allergic reactions as well as air conditioners in venues, buses and planes spewing out all kinds of recycled air.
Detrimental Side Effects to Vocal Health from OTC Antihistamines and Decongestants
To often many voice professionals reach for the most advertised and well known OTC antihistamines or decongestants. Popular Antihistamines include the brands: Benadryl, Chlor-Trimetron, Claritin, Dimetane, Hismanal, Nolahist, PBZ, Polaramine, Tavist, Zyrtec, Xyzal, Allegra, Claritin, Clarinex, and Alavert. While these drugs may work fast and seem to help reduce sinus issues at first glance, the side effects on the voice and body are, in my opinion, hardly worth it. Most often these side effects include drowsiness, feeling “spaced out”, and a seriously dry throat and voice that can last all day long. The exact opposite conditions of what we need when singing.
Decongestants are no better. Some of the more used decongestants include: Drixoral, Dimetapp, Dura-Vent, Exgest, Entex, Propagest, Novafed, and Sudafed. Decongestants are chemically related to adrenaline, the natural decongestant, which is a type of stimulant. The are not recommended for use by those with high blood pressure, tendencies for excitability, irregular heart rhythm, heart disease, glaucoma or those taking diet pills. Being on stage performing is enough of a rush with your adrenaline zipping away. The last thing we need is chemically produced adrenaline swimming around in our blood stream to whack us out so we don’t even realize how much we are pushing our voice and body until it’s to late. Next thing we know, what we thought was a killer show was actually a mess of vocal pushing and abuse due to this chemically produced “fake” energy.
